How does an Aeration pump reduce algae and “bad bacteria” in a dam?

Aeration pumps introduce oxygen into the water, increasing the levels of dissolved oxygen. Algae thrive in stagnant, low-oxygen environments. By boosting oxygen levels, the conditions become less favorable for algae growth. The additional oxygen also promotes health bacteria which break down organic matter in your dam reducing cloudyness.

How many of these pumps will I need?

Typically you should allow one pump per 1/3 surface acre of water, however, you aeration needs may be more if you have high fish stocks, ducks or cattle with access to the dam.

Another factor to consider is the shape of your dam. The sub-surface terrain of you dam can separate areas of you dam meaning that the pump may not be able to aerate the whole dam even if it is less than the pumps capabilities. For example if you dam is peanut shaped, or has an island in the middle, these will cause the water at each end to act as two separate bodies of water. Adding an aerator to only one side will result in half the dam being algae free, while algae remains on the other side.

Installation

Dam aeration pumps are easy to install, especially if you have access to a small boat. You need to prepare three cinder blocks and wire rope. Simply connect the wire rope to the three connection points on the float ring and the other end to the cinder blocks. You will need to float the pump in the desired location in your dam, then simply drive your boat away from the pump till the wire rope is close to its maximum extent and release the cinder block. Repeat this in three different directions around the aeration pump with each cinder block.

The power cable can simply wire into your timer or you can get your electrician to wire on a three pin socket so you can plug it directly into a standard GPO on shore.

Take care to prevent water touching the bare wires when releaseing the pump initially.
